Taking Time to Smell the Roses

by Susan Howard, Rose Lawn Board of Trustees.

So much to do and so little time...seems to be on everyone's mind lately. How did we become so busy? With so many new gadgets in our kitchens, on our cars, in our offices, and in our lives, coupled with the incredible amount of information thrown at us in this information age, we still pressure ourselves into a go-go-go lifestyle. We all have appointments, work, school, children, friends, friends of friends, social and volunteer obligations, and many of us have a very hard time saying "no" to just one more obligation.

However, many of us, myself included, are now learning that enough is enough. My child will be happy if she is not involved in before school, after school, during school, and school school activities, and I will be happier if I just let that stack of laundry go for just one more day (one more week in my case). I am a very busy person with my family (which I love), my work (which I love), etc. (which I love), but for the past two years, I have made a conscious effort to really slow down and, as they say, smell the roses.

This year I have stopped to smell the roses at Rose Lawn. I love that old house. I love all the new directions in which the house and grounds are going. I have enjoyed a book signing, a retirement party, a reception to honor all the Rose Lawn volunteers, a fabulous night of Music on the Green, and I am looking forward to another Antique Discovery Day, more Music on the Green, and a 5K road race.

I love the people I have met in association with Rose Lawn. The Board has so many plans for Rose Lawn, and we are making strides to see our plans through. We have wonderful plans for the grounds of Rose Lawn. Once a lot of the exterior work to the structure is completed, we can begin implementing our landscape design. The landscaping will combine the old with the new. We are planning rose gardens and many gracious planting beds to compliment the building, just as Mrs. Jones planted.

We must also design our landscaping with consideration of the current use of Rose Lawn such as the Rose Lawn Arts and Crafts Festival each fall. With careful planning, we can achieve beautiful grounds at Rose Lawn while skillfully arranging events to avoid physical harm to the landscaping.

I hope I can continue to slow my life down, enjoy each day as it comes, and I hope you will all join me by stopping by Rose Lawn to smell the roses.
