| Inaugural Report From the Board |
by Lynn Henderson, Chairman Rose Lawn Board of Trustees |
The common humor about Boards and committee work is the slowness with which progress is typically made. There is undeniably a lot of truth to that humor. And, the ten of us on the Rose Lawn Board of Trustees have been guilty of that same humor -- until earlier this week when we reviewed our accomplishments over the past one year. And what a list it is! (A copy of the list is available through Rose Lawn.) Serving on the Rose Lawn Board these past years has been extremely fun, challenging, frustrating, and at times even irritating -- but most of all, rewarding. Apathetic is certainly not an adjective I would ever use to describe our ten members! Our Board is made up of Bartow County citizens who are new to the community, therefore seeing Rose Lawn in a fresh light for all that it can be. Our Board has spent the past year formulating a "Mission Statement," which is better explained as a "Vision Statement." The close working relationship that has developed with the County administration this past year has been extremely helpful and encouraging in that regard. They have also supported our goals by providing a Director's job description that is museum and history oriented. Our hope is to take Rose Lawn beyond being thought of as a rental hall for private parties, and to make it more available to the citizens of Bartow for fun or cultural events. We've appointed a Community Promotions and Awareness Committee which is creating numerous events at Rose Lawn for Bartow residents. Also, we seek to make the building and the museum collection a part of school history curriculum. We have a Landscape/Grounds Committee that is planning further development of the rose garden into a showpiece for all to enjoy. There's a Collections/Inventory Committee that is in the process of documenting all of the furniture, clothing, papers, etc. at Rose Lawn, and researching ways to properly store and exhibit those items. A representative of the Sam Jones family is working with the Atlanta History Center and the Board to redesign and update the Sam Jones collection. The hours of the museum are being expanded to include Saturday mornings, making the museum more available to the public. I could go on and on! Each Board member has a vision -- that's why they are willing to take the time to volunteer for a 3-year term of responsibility, meetings, and work. I challenge you: visit one of our monthly Board meetings and see for yourself. Better yet, volunteer to work with us as an integral (or moderate) part of our programs. We have a spot for you. |
